In the space of twenty years, our country's population has grown from around 7 million to over 9 million, with visible effects on wages, housing and public finances. In the run-up to the vote on 14 June 2026 on the \u00abNo Switzerland with 10 million inhabitants\u00bb initiative, one question deserves to be asked without taboo: who is really benefiting from this accelerated demographic growth?<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6582\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In Switzerland, some debates have become almost impossible.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6583\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">These include: <strong>the link between immigration, the welfare state and political calculation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6584\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Officially, the free movement of persons is merely an economic instrument designed to meet the needs of the labour market.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6585\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In reality, the effects are much broader.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6586\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Since 2000, the Swiss population has grown from around <strong>7.2 million to over 9 million inhabitants<\/strong>. Much of this growth is due to immigration linked to free movement.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6587\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This rapid demographic transformation is profoundly changing <strong>the economy, the labour market and the social system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember6588\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Structural pressure on income<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember6589\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In many sectors, the massive influx of labour has contributed to <strong>keeping wages under pressure<\/strong>, At a time when the cost of living is skyrocketing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6590\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Housing, energy, health insurance premiums: everything is rising faster than incomes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6591\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The result is visible in public finances.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember6592\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">The example of Geneva<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember6593\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In the canton of Geneva, <strong>health insurance subsidies have risen sharply in recent years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6594\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Today, aid is often <strong>deducted directly from premiums<\/strong>, No administrative formalities are required.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6595\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This mechanism reveals a simple economic reality:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6596\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u2b95 a growing proportion of households <strong>can no longer pay its basic expenses without public assistance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6597\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In other words, the State is increasingly compensating <strong>the effects of a tight labour market<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember6598\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">A low-wage business model?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember6599\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In some urban areas, the proliferation of small independent businesses and micro-businesses is also evidence of an economic transformation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6600\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Many operate on extremely low margins, sometimes in very tough competitive conditions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6601\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This phenomenon raises a central question:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6602\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u2b95 <strong>Is Switzerland moving towards a growth model based on permanent population growth rather than productivity and wages?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember6603\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Immigration and political strategy<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember6604\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In this context, one element is rarely discussed openly:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6605\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">immigration is also changing <strong>political and electoral balance<\/strong> of the country in the long term.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6606\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The faster the population grows, the more the social structure changes:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6607\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">income, dependence on public support, composition of urban areas.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6608\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">These transformations have inevitably <strong>political consequences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6609\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">For some globalist parties, mainly on the left (Socialist Party, Greens), supporting high levels of immigration may therefore appear to be consistent with their economic and social vision: a greater State presence, more redistribution and increased public intervention.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6610\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">But above all, it's also a way of <strong>create a new captive electorate,<\/strong> called on to vote for them, to the detriment of ethnic voters. That's the logic, <strong>economic immigration and family reunification <\/strong>play a central role, insofar as <strong>this immigration is often unskilled and mostly supports left-wing parties<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember6611\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">The vote on 14 June 2026<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember6612\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This is precisely the context in which the Swiss will vote on the initiative <strong>\u00abNo 10-million Switzerland\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6613\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Beyond the slogan, the question posed is fundamental:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6614\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u2b95 <strong>Does Switzerland want to continue on a trajectory of rapid demographic growth, or does it want to regain more control over its development?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember6615\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember6616\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">For a long time, Switzerland had a simple model:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6617\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">- a productive economy<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6618\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">- high salaries<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6619\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">- a strong but sustainable welfare state<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6620\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">- and controlled demographic growth.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6621\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The question today is clear:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6622\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Can this model survive such rapid demographic growth?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6623\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">On 14 June 2026, this debate can no longer be avoided.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember6624\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">And as always in Switzerland, <strong>the decision will rest with the people.<\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Et si la transformation d\u00e9mographique rapide de la Suisse n\u2019\u00e9tait pas seulement une cons\u00e9quence \u00e9conomique, mais aussi un choix politique ?
